LA ROUX PATISSERIE, VICTORIA

 If you are looking for a little French charm on the west coast, this chic bakery is the place. On my very first trip to Victoria, British Columbia's pretty and bustling capital city, I stopped into La Roux Patisserie searching for cortados and pastries.

This sweet bakery came highly recommended online, so I felt confident in my choice. In fact, I made more than one trip during my stay. Located near the popular Fan Tan Alley, La Roux stands out with a Parisian like decorum. The shopfront catches the eye with a stylish purple exterior and bistro seating.

As I walked in the door, my eyes wandered to the checkered floors, vintage furniture and a sparkly chandelier. The display case was brimming with gorgeous treats-tarts, muffins and macarons, of course. I have to say, the eclairs looked like little works of art. They also make beautifully handcrafted cakes and gift boxes for special occasions.

I must have been a little too excited as I was one of the first customers, strolling in at 9:00 a.m. sharp. I had been starting my days early, taking in Victoria's lovely waterfront, and I was beyond ready for my caffeine fix. I enjoyed the bright and inviting atmosphere as I waited for my croissant to be ready: fresh from the oven. As expected, they were warm, buttery and golden. I also ordered a velvety smooth cortado that was a perfect kickstart to my day of sightseeing. I think cortados are one of life's simple pleasures, so I truly appreciate when they are made right and with attention to detail.

Set in the heart of Chinatown, it is easy to see why La Roux is both a local and tourist fave. On an island known for its dramatic landscapes and nature, I loved this nod to a dreamy French cafe. I was so glad I stopped by.
