SPRING SNAPSHOT: KYNANCE MEWS, KENSINGTON
After a very long winter, hints of spring are noticeable. But, barely. There is still a lot of snow that needs to melt before that can happen. So, I was feeling reminiscent. It seems as soon as the days get brighter, I think back to these moments. In this case, it is a jet lagged wander down Kynance Mews, one of London's most beautiful hidden gems.
When I arrived in London last May, I was ecstatic to be reunited with the city. But I didn't have much time to enjoy it, as I was preparing for a trip to Paris the following day. Not that I was complaining! I boarded the familiar Circle line and headed to one of my tried-and-true shopping spots, High Street Kensington, to buy a shirt for the occasion. Everyone needs a Eurostar outfit, right? I figured since I was in the neighbourhood, I would try and find this illusive and instagrammable mews I had so far, only seen online. I'll be honest, despite googling the directions, it was trial and error looking for it. But Kensington is the most idealistic spot to get 'lost' in, and quite frankly I could spend all day walking amongst the elegant, terraced flats, shops and cafes. I love these secret pockets of London that show a more local feel.
If you want to get technical, you will exit the adorably old-fashioned High Street Kensington station, turn on to Allen Street, and eventually find your way to Cornwall Gardens. I wasn't kidding when I said I got so distracted by the prettiness of Kensington that I never memorized the directions. Kynance Mews will catch your eye right away. The arched entrance is famously laced with vines and florals that change colour with the seasons. In the fall, it is a deep autumnal red and in the spring it is dancing with pinks and purples. Unfortunately, I seemed to miss the wisteria as it is a short window. But I can only imagine. It was still lovely as ever, and I was enjoying the peace and tranquility. In typical fashion, the mews was lined with colourful homes, bistro seats, potted flowers and gardens. I could feel the fatigue of the international flight washing away.
After strolling this gorgeous mews, you can find your way back to the high street in time for shopping and dinner. Did I mention Kensington has a glorious Whole Foods Market? Visiting Kynance Mews felt like a gentle start to what would be an action packed week in London (and Paris!). Can I do it all over again, please?
