COZY DAY TRIPS FROM LONDON
This time of year has me dreaming, more than usual, about wandering adorable destinations with a coffee in hand. In the UK, it is simple enough to take a train from London and be whisked away to a whimsical location. Here are five day trips I would recommend this winter.
OXFORD
Known mainly for being bookish and scholarly, this university town is more than just academics. Firstly, it is architectural heaven, brimming with historic attractions such as the Radcliffe Camera and Bodleian Library. Oxford, 'The City of Dreaming Spires', is composed of many colleges located throughout the city and you can feel the literary past down every cobblestone street. It also has great shopping, restaurants and entertainment for students and tourists alike. If you want to get into the holiday spirit, why not go watch the orchestra or browse an artisan craft fair. It's obvious Oxford has both looks and smarts covered.
BATH
I wrote about Bath's autumnal charm here but that carries into winter as well. No surprise, Bath's enchanting Georgian homes and storefronts seem extra warm and inviting this time of year, sprinkled with festive decor and markets. Don't miss the thermal spa and a crisp walk across the River Avon via Pulteney Bridge-one of my favourite bridges. I always think Bath is a perfect combination of intense history, romance and coziness. Why do some cities get everything?
YORK
York has been on my list for a very long time. In fact, I have always wanted to see Yorkshire in general as it is full of historical cities and craggy, moody coastlines. York, like Bath, is rooted in Roman history and a must for anyone who loves beautiful cathedrals and a good old fashioned side street. The Shambles is York's instantly recognizable street, dating back centuries and looking virtually untouched from the past. Just when you thought this medieval city couldn't get better, it transforms into a magical winter wonderland hosting various events and celebrations.
COTSWOLDS
The Cotswolds is what most visitors envision a UK holiday to look like. Roaring fireplaces, quaint cottages and friendly pubs down the street, the Cotswolds is like a movie you want to snuggle up to. I cant believe it actually exists. Though best experienced as a weekend trip, it is possible to see the Cotswolds in a day. While most of the region is accessible by car only, there are a handful of train friendly options like Moreton-in Marsh, which includes the signature stoned houses and country charm of the other towns. When can I book my ticket?
KENT
Though I have not experienced a lot of the English seaside yet, I think there is something inherently cozy about it. Kent, a county in Southern England, is reachable from London and includes many coastal towns such as Whitstable, Margate and Dover. With a combination of history and oceanside activities, it might be the ideal place for a hot cup of tea and a walk along the beach. I imagine the fish and chips are to die for, too. You could round off your Kentish Christmas by wandering its many market towns and castles.
You can't beat London at Christmas, but all of these places sound like the perfect escape from the big city. I hope I have convinced you to experience at least one of them.
