HAMILTON AT THE RICHARD RODGERS THEATRE
Every so often you accomplish a goal, more like a dream. For years now, I have been determined to see Hamilton on Broadway. Since the musical made its mark many years ago, it was always in the back of my mind. Despite the play having success all over the globe, I so badly wanted to see it in the Big Apple where it all began.
Unless you were living under a rock in 2015, you have at least heard of Hamilton. Certainly theatre lovers will be familiar with its status. Much of the world was captivated by Lin-Manuel Miranda and his triumphant take on an American story. You don't need to be a fan of musicals or be an expert in history to appreciate it either.
Of course, the genius idea to rap the entire thing made it stand out further. For some crazy reason, it all just worked. Hamilton is one of those shows that doesn't come along often. When something is so incredibly successful, people, especially critics, may question the hype. As someone who simply loves a night at the theatre, this is as good as it gets.
The Richard Rodgers Theatre has hosted many successful and notable shows over the years including Lin's Broadway debut "In the Heights". The marquee outside was bright and flashy, but the inside of the theatre was elegant and old-fashioned-my favourite kind! I have been lucky to see many amazing performances over the years, most of them in London, but this was a long time in the making. It only took hearing the familiar opening lines to realize we were in for something special.
It is so sweet when something lives up to the expectations you had for it. Seeing Hamilton on Broadway, in one of the best cities on the planet, was a truly special night. I don't take it for granted and often look at the framed program in my living room when I need a little inspiration. Yep. I framed it immediately.
