NEW YORK CITY HIGHLIGHTS PART 2

For most tourists, Manhattan feels like the centre of the universe and I totally get it. But we decided to venture to Brooklyn one morning for a day out. Brooklyn is just one of the five boroughs in New York. Historic and vibrant, it attracts a lot of visitors.

To get to Brooklyn we took the subway which is a uniquely New York experience. I still think it is one of the best and most authentic ways you can see any city you visit. After about a 20 minute journey, we arrived. Brooklyn was like what I expected but also surprised me, in a good way. It was a little quieter than I thought it would be, a retreat from Manhattan which sat boldly across the river. People were going about their daily lives. We headed immediately for Dumbo, one of the most popular Brooklyn neighbourhoods. I instantly noticed the signature Brownstones as well as cobblestones streets, flower stalls and vintage shops. We made a stop at the Time Out Market, brimming with food and entertainment options. Known specifically for the cuisine, you will find everything from a classic local bagel to sushi. It also showcases various art and music events. We really enjoyed stopping here to warm up as it was a colder morning.

The famous Dumbo backdrop, prominent on all social media platforms, is essentially a view of the Manhattan Bridge caught between buildings. Dumbo literally stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. When the sun hits it just right, a crowd will gather. But on an overcast January day, we nearly had this spot to ourselves. Brooklyn has stunning views of the city. Whether crossing the Brooklyn Bridge itself or standing at the waterfront, you can admire New York from all angles. I was in awe taking snapshots of the misty bridges and skyscrapers, not to mention the beautiful Brooklyn architecture. Brooklyn impressed me with its outdoorsy feel and is actually a haven for large open spaces and parks. It is much more nature loving than I ever gave it credit for. Two words: sunset views. Again, we visited Brooklyn on possibly one of the greyest days, but loved the atmosphere regardless.

So how would I describe Brooklyn on my first visit? I would describe it as humble, cool and artistic. It is the place where you can walk along the river, visit an indie market or have a moonlit dinner with a sparkling city backdrop. Well, I guess it has a little of everything. I would love to go again and visit other neighbourhoods like Park Slope or Williamsburg as I know we were just scratching the surface.
