MY #1 TRAVEL RECOMMENDATION FOR 2024

It is that time of year again when travelers are making plans for 2024. Hopefully, you have a trip in mind but if not, I thought I would sprinkle some inspiration on the blog and talk about my #1 recommendation on where to travel to in 2024: Edinburgh, Scotland!

I visited Edinburgh almost a decade ago (wow!) and it left a lasting impression on me. I will never forget pulling up in the taxi to my hotel on the Royal Mile. I knew immediately I had underestimated Edinburgh and that it would become one of my most favourite places. Back in the day,  I would have said Edinburgh is underrated. But more and more, it seems to be getting the credit it deserves. Over the holiday season, I seen tons of popular posts showcasing Edinburgh's gorgeously festive atmosphere. Since it is New Year's Day as I write this, it is worth mentioning that Edinburgh is known for New Years' celebrations. It is referred to as  Hogmanay and attracts people from all over the world.

I went to Edinburgh in a completely different time of year, proof that this city shines in all seasons. My arrival in Edinburgh was on a July evening. The weather was beautiful, it was the FIFA Cup finals, and there was just a sense of summer in the air. The faint sound of bagpipes were heard at all times and buildings looked like a movie set. One of the biggest reasons I recommend Edinburgh is its beauty. Many travelers who frequent the UK have probably dreamed of exploring the Scottish Highlands. While Edinburgh is not exactly the same thing, the scenery is stunning. But the true beauty of Edinburgh, in my opinion, is in its romantic Gothic architecture. This city is truly steeped in history. Underneath the charming exterior, is a mysterious darkness you can feel in the streets. It is a traveler's dream to wander the alleyways, staircases and even tunnels of this city.

Edinburgh also has something for everyone whether you are traveling as a family, a couple or solo. From majestic castles, to walking tours, to cozy pubs, to beautiful hikes, leisurely shopping and more, I think it's safe to say we are all benefiting here? So, which sights should you not miss in Edinburgh? The Royal Mile is an obvious one. The Royal Mile is just that dependable attraction in a city. I started here and always ended up back here at the end of the day. The Royal Mile is an iconic street in Old Town Edinburgh that runs all the way from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, the royal residence of the Scottish capital. In between, are a plethora of shops, restaurants and entertainment. Off of here, you find Grassmarket and Victoria Street, a lovely curved street perfect for photographing and window shopping. It is easy enough to then venture into the New Town, which shows a more modern side of Edinburgh. Edinburgh is also an outdoorsy city with pretty waterfronts and scenic views via Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh's much loved, ancient volcano.

Gone are the days when Edinburgh gets overlooked by larger cities in Europe and even other cities in Scotland itself. I truly believe that Edinburgh steals the heart of all that visit. With most cities in the world, you will find mixed opinions. But I don't think I've heard anyone in the travel community say a bad thing about Edinburgh. It is smaller than neighbouring Glasgow and can technically be seen in a day. But I spent three nights there and would recommend taking your time to enjoy it. While I really love exploring bigger cities, Edinburgh is a perfect size and pace. I always say Edinburgh is an ideal place for travelers interested in traveling solo for the first time. I felt very relaxed and happy here.

Edinburgh is a city I love to recommend and often find myself dreaming of the day I can say, "It feels great to be back in Edinburgh!"

What cities would you recommend for 2024?
