SELF-CARE ROUTINE FOR THE POST-VACATION BLUES

I think most of us experience a sense of sadness after a holiday. I don't think any traveler should be hard on themselves in this situation. Some trips are not just good, they are meaningful and snapping back to reality can take time. One thing that has helped me over the years is establishing a solid self-care routine to stop the blues in their tracks. If I'm going to be sad, I might as well be cozy and sad. Here is my advice.

First things first, it is crucial to have a couple recovery days before going back to your job. I know it can't always be helped, and sometimes you literally go from baggage claim to getting ready for work in the morning (man, that's the worst), but I would strategically plan to avoid that. You need that extra time at the end. That way you can sleep in late the next day or, depending on the state of your jet leg, get up in the middle of the night without any worries. Hey, that actually sounds kind of fun.

As soon as you are in the door, get as much unpacking and laundry started as possible. Although it sounds like a lot of extra chores, it helps out later when that time zone hits and it will hit. If you are still running on that travel adrenaline, might as well use it to your advantage. I would suggest making sure your place is tidy before you go so that you don't have to worry about it afterwards. You should seriously make things as easy as possible for yourself.

One bonus to coming home is simply that, the comforts of home. Take advantage of a hot shower, your own bed and fresh coffee. While you are at it, do a face mask or something you don't normally do. Chances are, you are going to be dehydrated on top of everything else. I found drinking tea at night can help with digestion and sleep problems arising from, you guessed it, jet lag. Listen to your body and instead of fighting, let it win. This may mean you are taking frequent naps or eating your meals at strange times, but it's fine. Your body clock will straighten out eventually. I would also consider having a super simple dinner planned. Since jet lag affects our appetite you might not be hungry or you might be hangry. It's a gamble. You have permission to treat yourself to your favourite fast food or delivery option. Last time I was at the airport I brought home pizza and watched Squid Game and have no regrets.

If it's not too soon, you could even take a look at your photos or souvenirs you bought. It can be tricky to find time for that while hopping around the globe. It might even put a smile on your face. This is the moment every traveler realizes, 'Wow, 24 hours ago I was at the Eiffel Tower and now I am sitting in my pajamas questioning my life choices'. We've all been there

Most importantly, let yourself feel all the feels. The post-vacation blues are so real, but I hope these tricks can help you like they helped me!
